Blink and You miss it Canadian Politics

Journal Entry: Tue Dec 9, 2008, 11:02 PM
*Topic of the Week: Liberal Leadership change and more Harper hypcorisy*

So, if you're Canadian I'm positive you've heard a little bit about what's going on in the political spectrum, if not than you must be living under a rock.

Over the past week, Conservative rhetoric and lies spread through the country faster than influenza in an urban metropolis. Harper's claims that the Coalition government was "undemocratic" were quickly rebuffed by experts, however, not before the uneducated population bought into Harpers rhetoric. The country has been divided (with Harper pitting everyone against people from Quebec, but claiming the coalition was the one dividing the country).

Opinion polls (the same polls that said that Harper would get a majority, which didn't happen) claim that the majority of the country doesn't approve of the coalition. Even if that is so, I think there's one simple reason for that, misinformation.

With the Conservative spin machine at full force, most Canadians are under the impression that the Coalition was an undemocratic, illegal, power-hungry greed move by parties that were being poor sports about the results of the last election.

This is bull crap. The mini-budget, or "fiscal update" (that included no plan for the quickly failing economy) that started this whole thing included such partisan agenda as:
1)cutting the vote subsidy ($1.95 per vote which means everything to every party except for the Conservatives, who received over 20 million dollars in private funding) which would cripple in essence all of the Conservatives opposition (sheesh, not a move to give the Conservatives an unfair advantage, right.....),
2) taking away pay equity for women, which in essence, would be making the statement that women don't deserve to make as much as men do (currently on average, women make 72.9 cents for every dollar a man makes)... Here's a link for more on that [link]
3) taking away the rights of civil servants to strike, and a proposal to cut their wages. Hmm, take away their right to strike, and lower their wages (and leave them with no recourse to that).

The Conservative party made statements in that budget that were against the core values of the other parties. They did this because they felt so confident in the lack of organization in the left that they thought the opposition would have NO choice but to pass it. It was sneaky.
The second the coalition government made an announcement that it existed Harper quickly retracted, took out some of the more contentious issues (not the cut to pay equity) and refused to put the fiscal update before Parliament as he knew it would result in a vote of no confidence.

Instead, Harper went to the Governor General and asked her to prorogue (suspend) Parliament for two months, and ran away like a coward.

So now Canada is left without an acting Parliament, and instead of having a government working on how to solve this economic crisis, we're dealing with attacks coming from the Conservatives (funded by public dollars) about the coalition being undemocratic, a power grabbing move, and about how the Left is aligning with Separatists (alright, this one needs to be explained, the Bloc Quebecois is a fourth party in Parliament that represents Quebec only, they've had a desire to separate from canada for 20 years, and have yet to be successful) Now what's laughable about the last attack is that Stephen Harper himself tried to align with the Bloc on numerous occasions, at one point to form a coalition government with them to take down the Liberal Minority government, and depended on the Bloc largely to vote with them 142 times.

Alright this is long winded I know, but there is a lot of ground to cover :D Sorry!!!

So, what's happening now? Well Stephane Dion (the leader of the Liberal Party) has stepped down and has now been replaced by Michael Ignatieff.

So with the Liberal party reworking house, it's anyone's guess as to what's going to happen next.

If you have any questions, or would like me to explain anything further, please feel free to ask! Misinformation and lack of education is our enemy!

The fate of the world is in our hands..........
