Canadian and Sick of Harper?

Journal Entry: Thu Dec 4, 2008, 1:15 PM
*Topic of the Week: Rallies and voter apathy*

Well if you're Canadian, chances are you've heard something about the Political crisis we're currently facing. Well, Harper won at least one part of this battle. The Governor General has agreed to prorogue (suspending parliament) until the New Year. This will most likely put us into another election in the new year. That's another 300 million dollars that the country and the leftist parties can't afford.
The Conservatives will use fear-mongering to scare people into either voting for them, or not voting at all. I am so sick of this. I am sick of lies turning into a minority government. I am sick that only 38% of the voting population voted, and out of that 12% voted for the Conservatives thus giving them a minority government.
I am tired of people thinking that voting doesn't matter, that if they don't like the choices there's no point. People need to understand, you do NOT vote for Prime Minister, you do NOT vote for a party, you vote for local representatives that make up Parliament that chooses the Prime Minister. People need to look at their local options, what they want to do for their neighbourhoods, not what party they're affiliated with. I don't care what way you vote, just vote! There are people all over this world that don't have the right to vote, or if they do have the right to vote, only have the right to vote one way (risking mutilation or death if they vote differently). We as Canadians take our freedoms and rights for granted and that makes me sick, and tired, and devastated and angry!

Well, we have an excellent opportunity here. In the face of a possible Coalition government, or a possible election, those of us who care, those of us who are passionate, can be moved to act. We can be moved to protest (as that is one of our rights), we can be moved to move others. I would like everyone who cares to take 5 minutes explaining the situation to someone who doesn't understand it. I would like you to find people who don't vote and explain to them the importance of that right (especially women and minorities).

The last election was a poor example of democracy, this Coalition government and movement is a perfect example of what Parliamentary democracy is.

If you would like your voice to be heard, attend the rallies that have been planned all across this country. In particular, if you're in Toronto, there will be one at Nathan Phillips Square this Saturday starting at noon. Both Jack Layton and Stephen Dion are scheduled to speak.

If you are as sick and tired of voter apathy, and the Conservatives as I am, do something about it.
Stand up, use your voice, and your art!

We as artists have a wonderful opportunity here. We can show people how art matters, how it can sway opinion, induce emotion, make people act.

So, I would like to create a contest (not exactly sure how, but I'll find out). Political images, image that can spur people to movement, images that show how fortunate we are to be in Canada and have the rights and freedoms that we have.

If anyone has any suggestions for me, please let me know. If anyone can help me get this movement and contest going, please help!!!!!

The fate of the world is in our hands..........
